Axial Yeti XL |
This 1/8th scale off-road racer looks pretty sweet. I like the idea of having an R/C vehicle that can tackle a lot of different terrain and higher speeds.
10/23/14
I ordered a few things.
Tower Hobbies:
Yeti XL
(backordered)
Futaba R614S receiver
Futaba S9157 servo
FMA Direct
(4) 5000 MaH 3S
batteries
I would rather run my Futaba 4PK radio than the Tactic that the Yeti XL comes with. I also want to mess around with running a gyro. I have a Futaba GY520 on the shelf, so I'm going to try that out.
10/27/14
The servo and receiver arrived from Tower today. I started programming
my 4PK and GY520 with natural gyro and AVCS heading hold.
10/30/14
Batteries arrived today. I didn't realize I bought the batteries with
the XH balance connector. Everything else I run use the PA connector.
From FMA Direct I ordered two adapter circuit boards and four replacement
balance connector ends.
11/03/14
The balance connector circuit boards and replacement balance ends
arrived today from FMA Direct. I've decided to just use the adapter
circuit boards for now rather than cut and solder the balance connectors.
11/04/14
The Yeti XL arrived today.
Started swapping out the Tactic radio equipment for Futaba gear.
11/06/14
Drove the Yeti today. It is shockingly fast. Desperately needs a
rear sway bar. Gyro is fun.
11/08/14
Broke my first parts today. I nailed a large rock at high speed and
the rock didn't move much. Surprisingly, all the plastic parts (frame
tray, suspension, tie-rods) are intact. The speed control broke it's screw
mounts. I glued the mounts back together and supplemented with
double-sided sticky tape under the ESC. Later in the day the Yeti cart wheeled
and broke the front left upper shock eye. I was happy to see that the kit
comes with spares. I also decided to try running without the gyro to see
how stable it is. It actually runs great, so I don't think I'll be putting
it back in.
I also went to the local high school track to do a speed test. On my first pass I was gently increasing throttle, but I wasn't gentle enough. At 26 MPH it lifted the front wheels and flipped back onto it's roof. I was able to make other runs and the highest speed I got was 51 MPH (6S batteries).
